Healthy Challah Bread Recipe

Challah bread is such a magical bread. I have found the amazing healthy bready caky recipe that will BLOW OFF YOUR MIND! It's perfect for a Friday night dinner / family dinners / holidays / special occasions etc. You are so going to enjoy this Challah. It's absolutely guilty-free and will amaze you with the final result if you follow all the steps.

We are only going to use natural ingredients for this recipe. For example: whole wheat flour, honey, eggs (sorry my vegan friends), veggie/olive oil etc. If you don't really want to make this recipe the healthiest, you can change the flour into all purpose flour or change the honey into sugar. That being said, I find the honey adding much more texture and flavour. Yes yes, I know it sounds weird but after trying using both sugar and honey I find that the sugar just makes this specific recipe a bit "dry" and not as soft and caky. That is also why I love this healthy recipe! The honey just adds so much instead of making it taste just healthy, it tastes like a tasty healthy style Challah.


The Importance Of Sifting Flour

Now let's talk about sifting flour. This step is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP in this recipe and basically every time using whole wheat flour. You really want to make sure that you sift the flour well until it's nice and airy. Now, if you sift well, you might find 4 cups of flour turning into 3 cups or less. In this case, just sift more flour if needed.

WRITTEN RECIPE:

Ingredients:

-4 cups whole wheat sifted flour

-2 1/4 tsp instant yeast

-1 tsp salt

-2 eggs

-1 cup warm water

-1/2 cup honey

-1/2 cup veggie oil + 1 tsp for oiling bowl

-egg + honey wash


Instructions:

1. In a large bowl whisk together sifted flour (read above why its so important to sift flour), salt and yeast.


2. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, warm water, honey, veggie oil.


3. Pour wet ingredients mixture into the large bowl with the dry ingredients and start mixing until starting to combine. Once everything starts to come together, move to a clean working surface and start kneading for 10 mins to activate the yeast.


4. Once dough is ready, place in a large oiled bowl and cover for the first rise in a warm spot. For at least 5h & max 8h.


5. After dough had risen, remove from the bowl and shape the way you wish. (In the video you can watch 2 ways to do so). After done shaping, place in the pan that you will bake the challah in and let rise for another hour.


6. Once dough is ready after all rises and preparations, egg + honey wash it and bake in preheated 350 degree F oven for 25-30 mins. You will know the dough is ready when it will double its size + be gold and brown.
